Student Trustees 2026 - August 2026 Board Meeting

CEO’s update

Chief executive officer, Wes Hahn, shared his excitement for the new school year and celebrated the work conducted by departments over the summer. He also reported on the following changes that have come into effect through the Putting Student Achievement First Act, Bill 101, including:

  • The title of director of education has become chief executive officer (CEO), and the role of chief education officer (CEdO) will also be held by Hahn.
  • The Ministry of Education will be updating the process for approval and oversight of capital projects.
  • The Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE) is now the central bargaining group who will bargain with unions and federations representing school board staff.
  • Edwin is now a province-wide tool for teachers to access resources for use in the classroom.
  • Attendance/participation marks will be part of secondary school student’s final mark.
  • Board motions/resolutions will continue to be brought forward by trustees through committee work, but will be confirmed by the CEO.

Hahn noted that trustees will continue to have oversight of the governance of the school board, which still includes hiring a CEO, and that information sessions will continue for trustees. TLDSB trustees will carry on being valuable members of their constituent group and the liaison between community members and the Board.

2025-2026 voice initiatives

Hahn provided trustees with an overview of the types of initiatives conducted last school year to engage and collect insight from students, teachers, educational assistants, parents/guardians, school council chairs, principals, and community partners, including:

  • Surveys for parents/guardians and students
  • School council chair and principal meetings
  • Advisory groups
  • Union/federation leadership collaborative meetings
  • Director’s Student Voice Forums
  • Community breakfasts
  • Launch of an online engagement platform

He noted how these initiatives are extremely valuable, how many topics brought to the forefront are already being actioned on, and how the commitment to receiving voice from across the system will continue.

He also shared the student perspectives from the Student Voice Forums held in the spring, including them openly sharing their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. These key areas of feedback highlight opportunities to better support and equip TLDSB students for the future.

Summer learning overview

Associate superintendent of learning, Jennifer Clark, shared an overview of the summer learning that took place in July at six different locations for 181 students from Kindergarten to Grade 2.

With a focus on foundational literacy, 16 teachers and special education resource teachers (SERTS) executed programming to students who would benefit from the program the most. Clark noted that there was an intentional integration of Indigenous perspectives and environmental stewardship through various books this year. Clark also shared that 100 percent of students furthered their foundational literacy skills and gained confidence in their own abilities.
